343’s Dane Morris uses an 808 to complete a melodic bassline. He chooses a stable sample that doesn’t have any pitch bend; then, he tunes it to follow the chords. The kick pattern establishes the right rhythm for the 808s and reminds us of his hip-hop-infused style. Typically, he adjusts the attack and decay of each sample to best emphasize the beat. Great Dane pumps up the saturation and sculpts the highs and lows with EQ. Lastly, he adds erosion with some noise for extra presence. Check it out here!

The celebration dates back to 1979, making this year the 45th annual commemoration. Founded by Kenny Gamble of the Black Music Association and signed into law by former President Jimmy Carter, the movement was a pivotal recognition of Black art in America's post-Jim Crow era.

Jaime xx doesn't need an introduction. With the slew of releases he's been giving us steadily over the past couple of years, we suspected a potential sophomore album was on the horizon. We were right! In Waves was announced recently alongside the release of his new single, "Treat Each Other Right," a modernized disco track blending past and present with old-school vocal samples and modern sound design. The Grammy-nominated artist has made waves through the music industry, working with legends Radiohead, Rihanna, Drake, and even the late great Gil Scott-Heron! Other favorite tracks of ours, "I Know There's Gonna Be Good Times," "Girl," and "KILL DEM," are all available on Spotify and Apple Music.
